It is an institution without lucrative purpose designed for the defence and support of the interests of Geologists, established by law 73/1978 of 26 december, is a public corporation, protected by law and recognized by the state, with legal personality and capacity required for the exercise of its functions and to fulfil its purposes. It Enjoys, in all respects, the range of pre-eminence attributed to such entities by the law on Professional colleges, as is the only corporación standing to bring to the public authorities the problems and aspirations of the profession, assuming in this regard the representation of the collective professional. The statutes of ICOG were approved by royal decree 1378/2001 of 7 december 2001.
